the garden of the future

I try my best to stay in the present. But now I am planning for the future at the same time.

I have been harvesting seeds from my garden, from plants that I purposely allowed to go to seed for this reason. It is even more satisfying than harvesting the actual produce! It is empowering, at a time when I feel powerLESS, to be able to harness this lovely hope for next year.

So far, I have lettuce, spinach, radishes (see photo) tomatoes of several varieties, and many herbs.  About 10 different flower seeds are now also in little jars along with a tiny twist-tied bundle of rice which serves to keep them nice and dry until spring.

It has been a challenge to work with my arthritic fingers, to part the seeds from their pods, to pour them safely into the jars, even to get the jar lids on tight enough. But I stubbornly persevere and feel victorious about what I CAN do instead of what I cannot.

I planted zinnias this year from last year's seeds, all of which came from pink blossoms. But Nature surprised the heck outa me when this year's plants had orange and peach colored blossoms mixed in with the pink.  Oh, well. At least I did not plant last year's tomato seeds and get a surprise harvest of zucchini!
